1. Remember, no men are strange, no countries foreign
Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes Like ours : the land our brothers walk upon
Is earth like this, in which we all shall lie. (Page 80)

3. Remember they have eyes like ours that wake
Or sleep, and strength that can be won
By love. In every land is common life

Thinking About the Poem

(i) “Beneath all uniforms…” What uniforms do you think the poet is speaking about ?
Answer (i) The poet is speaking about ‘uniforms’ as different nationalities all over the world,

(i) "सभी गणवेशों के नीचे..." कवि किस गणवेश की बात कर रहा है?

उत्तर (i) कवि पूरे विश्व में विभिन्न राष्ट्रीयताओं के रूप में 'वर्दी' के बारे में बात कर रहा है,

(ii) How does the poet suggest that all people on earth are the same ?
Answer (ii) He suggests that a single human body breathes beneath different nationalities.

(ii) कवि कैसे सुझाव देता है कि पृथ्वी पर सभी लोग समान हैं?

उत्तर (ii) उनका सुझाव है कि एक ही मानव शरीर विभिन्न राष्ट्रीयताओं के नीचे सांस लेता है।

2. In stanza 1, find five ways in which we all are alike. Pick out the words.

2. पद 1 में, ऐसे पांच तरीके खोजें जिनमें हम सभी एक जैसे हों। शब्द उठाओ।

उत्तर।

कोई आदमी अजीब नहीं है।

कोई देश विदेशी नहीं।

सभी वर्दी के नीचे एक ही शरीर सांस लेता है।

जमीन हर जगह एक जैसी है।

जमीन वही है जहां सब झूठ बोलेंगे।

3. How many common features can you find in stanza 2 ? Pick out the words.
Answer

They are aware of sun, air and water.

They Are fed by peaceful harvests.

Their hands are ours.

Their lines in the palms are the same as these (there) are in our hands.

The words are : They, too, are aware of sun and air and water ; are fed by peaceful harvests, their hands are ours etc.

3. आप दूसरे पद्यांश में कितनी सामान्य विशेषताएं पा सकते हैं? शब्द उठाओ।

उत्तर

वे सूरज, हवा और पानी के बारे में जानते हैं।

उन्हें शांतिपूर्ण फसल से खिलाया जाता है।

उनके हाथ हमारे हैं।

हथेलियों में उनकी रेखाएं वैसी ही होती हैं, जैसी ये (वहां) हमारे हाथों में होती हैं।

शब्द हैं: वे भी, सूर्य और वायु और जल के बारे में जानते हैं; शांतिपूर्ण फसल से पोषित होते हैं, उनके हाथ हमारे आदि हैं।

4. “… whenever we are told to hate our brothers…” When do you think this happens ? Why ? Who ‘tells’ us ? Should we do as we are told at such times ? What does the poet say ?

Answers 4. Sometimes, some persons with vested interests incite the masses. Due to this we start hating our brothers. They do so to serve their own selfish interests. They tell us to create riots. We should not do so as we are told. Instead, we should remain peaceful. If we obey them, we help them in their anti-social activities. This will mean a great loss to the people and the country.

4. "... जब भी हमें अपने भाइयों से नफरत करने के लिए कहा जाता है ..." आपको क्या लगता है कि ऐसा कब होता है? क्यों ? हमें कौन 'बताता' है? क्या हमें वैसा ही करना चाहिए जैसा हमें ऐसे समय में कहा जाता है? कवि क्या कहता है?

उत्तर 4. कभी-कभी निहित स्वार्थ वाले कुछ व्यक्ति जनता को भड़काते हैं। इससे हम अपने भाइयों से घृणा करने लगते हैं। ऐसा वे अपने स्वार्थ साधने के लिए करते हैं। वे हमें दंगा करने के लिए कहते हैं। हमें ऐसा नहीं करना चाहिए जैसा हमें बताया गया है। इसके बजाय हमें शांत रहना चाहिए। अगर हम उनकी बात मानते हैं तो हम उनकी असामाजिक गतिविधियों में उनकी मदद करते हैं। इससे लोगों और देश को बहुत नुकसान होगा।
