कठिन शब्दार्थ-placid (प्लैसिड्) = शांत । self-contained (सेल्फ-कन्टेन्ड) = संयमी/आत्म संतुष्ट।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-मैं विचार करता हूँ कि मैं अपने अंदर परिवर्तन कर सकता हूँ और जानवरों के साथ रह सकता है, क्योंकि वे अत्यधिक शांत व संयमी हैं, मैं खडा रहकर उनकी ओर लंबे समय ध्यानपूर्वक देखता रहता हूँ।

भावार्थ-कवि कहता है कि आज का इंसान न शांत चित्त का है और न आत्म-संयमी है। प्रकृति व प्राकृतिक जीवों के लगातार निरीक्षण, पर्यवेक्षण आदि से इंसान बहुत कुछ सीख सकता है।

कठिन शब्दार्थ-sweat (स्वेट) = व्यग्र/उदास होना । whine (वाइन्) = शिकायत करना/झींकना। sins (सिन्ज) = गुनाहों। demented (डिमेन्टिड) = पागल। mania (मेनिआ) = अति उत्साह/अति
neels (नाल्ज) = घुटनों पर झुकता है। evince (विन्स) = प्रदशित करना। possession (पजेशन्) = स्वामित्व में।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-कवि कहता है कि जानवर अपनी स्थिति/दशा के बारे में उदास नहीं होते हैं और उसकी शिकायत भी नहीं करते हैं। वे रात्रि में (मनुष्यों की तरह) जागते नहीं हैं और अपने पापों के लिए रोते नहीं हैं। वे ईश्वर के प्रति अपने कर्तव्यों की चर्चा करके

मुझे परेशान भी नहीं करते हैं। कोई भी (जानवर) असंतुष्ट नहीं है, व कोई भी वस्तुओं के स्वामित्व के साथ पागल नहीं होता है। कोई भी (जानवर) दूसरे (जानवर) के सामने घुटने नहीं टेकता है और न ही अपनी किस्म के सामने जो पिछले हजारों वर्ष से जीती आ रही है। इस सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर ” कोई (जानवर) सम्माननीय या अप्रसन्न नहीं है। इसलिए वे अपने रिश्ते मुझे दिखाते हैं और मैं उन्हें अपनाता हूँ। वे मेरे लिए अपनत्व का संकेत लिए आते हैं, परन्तु बिना बोले भावों से प्रकट करते हैं जिसमें कोई मिश्रण नहीं होता है।

भावार्थ-कवि कहता है कि मानवों को जानवरों से शिक्षा लेनी चाहिए अर्थात् जैसी परिस्थिति उन्हें ईश्वर ने प्रदान की है उसी में सन्तुष्ट रहना चाहिये। उन्हें चापलूसी, संग्रहण, भेदभाव और झूठे आँसू बहाने से बचना चाहिए।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-मुझे आश्चर्य होता है कि वे ये संकेत कहाँ से लाते हैं। क्या मैं उस मार्ग से बहुत समय पहले गुजरा था और मैंने उन्हें सावधानी से गिरा दिया था? मैंने जानवरों से ये सीख पहले नहीं ली थी।

भावार्थ-कवि हैरानी व्यक्त करता है कि जानवरों से सीख प्राप्त करने में उसने देरी क्यों की। कवि के विषय में वॉल्ट विटमॅन (1819-92) आरम्भिक अमेरिकन काव्य में एक मुख्य व्यक्तित्व है। ऐसे युग में जब सभी काव्य, तुकांत/तालबद्ध व प्रबल-दुर्बल बलाघातों की विशिष्ट व्यवस्था वाला होता था, विटमॅन ने परम्परा से विचलन किया और मुक्त छंद में एक नए प्रकार के क्रांतिकारी काव्य की रचना की। वह सभी प्रकार से परम्परा विरोधी था, यहाँ तक कि अपने सामाजिक जीवन में भी।
